When I was younger, I used to spend over $150 every month buying bodybuilding and weight gain supplements. I have taken:
- All sorts of Protein powders
- Whey Protein
- Casein
- Creatine supplements (powders and capsules)
- Nitrous Oxide
- amino acid supplements
- Testosterone Stacks
- Weight gain pills
I think I even took some stuff that had human growth hormones in it. To be honest it was sickening to drink these supplements over 3x a day (let’s face it – they’re not the best-tasting concoctions are they?!) but I learned to live with it.
I remember once how my girlfriend almost threw up just by smelling one of the stuff I used to take. You’d think that would have given me a clue to question whether what’s in them were harmful or not – but I didn’t (doh!).
I noticed how taking these supplements gave me a bad temper, high blood pressure, increased perspiration, high heart rate, and headaches. The only side effect I couldn’t complain about was a massive increase in my already high sex drive ![]()
Of course I was training really hard at the gym, but I wasn’t sure how the supposed muscle building supplements were really working for me. But I kept taking them anyway. After all, there were a lot of huge guys at the gym (and the gym staff themselves) who swore by those products. So I kept taking my bodybuilding supplements without even thinking about it.
That is, until I had to save up for a car. I passed my driving exam and like most young men, having the coolest car possible was a MUST. So I had to make some extra cash and also save up some. I looked at what expenses I could cut and surprise surprise: the monthly expenditure for my bodybuilding supplements was among my top 5 biggest expenses!
To make a long story short, I figured that I will just have to work harder at the gym and get muscles without my supplements.
Fast forward to 4 months later and guess what: I noticed I made more muscle gains with no supplements compared when I was taking supplements! (and I bought my brand new car! hah!)
This really made me think, and that’s when I started being more aware (and less gullible) when it came to buying weight gain and muscle building supplements. Because of this experience, I never bought any those supplements at all since then (apart from protein powder and 100% natural and organic supplements with 1 or 2 ingredients that I can pronounce in them like Spirulina, wheatgrass, Maca powder, etc).
If you’d been trying to get bigger, chances are you have also taken (or is still taking) a lot of bogus bodybuilding supplements with ingredients you can hardly pronounce. If you’re still buying Muscle building supplements that promise to transform your body instantly or make your muscles grow faster than garden weeds, I’d like you to evaluate honestly what they’re really doing for you.
I’m aware that like my younger self, there are many young men out there who are still falling for misleading claims and still paying extortionate prices for bodybuilding and weight gain supplements, so I thought I’d show you this video clip from the documentary “Bigger Stronger Faster” by Chris Bell. This short video clip will show you:
- That Supplements in general like Sports supplements, weight gain supplements, muscle building and bodybuilding supplements are NOT regulated by the FDA.
- That you, me or anybody can easily set up a legitimate business making and selling these supplements – without having to meet any quality standards
- The cost for Supplements companies to make their products are very little, allowing them to easily make well over 2000% to 3000% profit margins! No it’s NOT a typo – I really meant to say two thousand to three thousand per cent profit margins.
I invite you to take an honest look about your own use of bodybuilding supplements, reflect for a moment, and then take the action you judge is best for you.
I am not insinuating that ALL types and forms of muscle building supplements in the market today are useless or harmful – but due to the fact that the whole industry is unregulated, it’s not a surprise why most of these bodybuilding products are useless and even harmful. You really need to be extremely discerning when it comes to purchasing one of these products. You need to really know what to look for in order to be able to tell the good ones from the bad ones.
You need to make sure that you really know what exact ingredients are in them, and what the effects of these ingredients are, and that the sources you’re getting your information from are 100% trustworthy and reliable.
But that’s the thing: How do you REALLY know?
And therein lies the issue.
How do you really know that when they say it contains 29% of ingredient X, that it really does contain 29% of ingredient X and not a mixture of different types of undeclared compounds?
There is a trick that I will show you in a later blog post how you can get around this problem, but for now I want you to think seriously about your current use of supplements.
The most important point I want you to take home with you from this article is to not forget what “supplements” really are – they are only meant to supplement your nutrition. They are NOT the end all and be all. They are best used to enhance what is already there. So get your foundations right FIRST before seeking ways how to further enhance the spectacular results you are already producing from pure hard work – and using natural means.
Focus on what truly works:
- An effective and properly structured weight training program
- A well-balanced and personalized nutrition program
